There are several different types of web hosting, and you need to make sure you choose the right one for your website. There is free hosting, shared hosting, clustered hosting, and reseller hosting to name a few.
Free hosting is more for the personal website that you can create on a larger server. This is usually blog’s, guilds, or personal pages like MySpace allows. They are offering you a site that you register for and then make it your own in certain aspects. This type of web hosting is not going to be your ideal business site.
Shared Hosting or Clustered Hosting may be your best bet for web hosting a business site. With shared hosting there are things you need to be wary of. You are sharing the server, so if a business site on the server gets millions of hits or traffic in one day this could mean bad news for your site. The reason is the server can only deal with so many hits at a time, and if this is exceeded the one getting less hits will be sluggish and possibly inaccessible for the day.
Clustered hosting is a little different, but works on the same principle. The server is going to be larger so you have your own domain, and therefore the traffic will be able to access your site as well as those on the cluster if they need to.
There are also application specific web hosting sites. There is image hosting, video hosting, file hosting, remote back up, game server hosting, DNS hosting, and E- mail hosting. These specific applications are going to be determined by the type of site you have. For example, if you have a lot of images for your website and not much written content you need an image hosting site. The site will have more speed and power behind the images to make the download as quick as possible. The other types of sites are based in HTML which can make an image almost impossible to download in a decent time frame.
The game server hosting is also different in that it is a social networking server, allowing individuals around the world to play a game, talk, and have a great time. Web hosting has specific regulations to follow so that you have the best host for the site you will be launching. A web developer can help you locate a good web host or provide one for you.
