Web Design Basics

Web designing is not about the company, but what the consumer can get from the company. Therefore in any web design that is created, the person doing the design must always keep the target audience in their mind. There are other aspects of web design that are very important.

The first thing a lot of web designers think about is how much speed can be found in downloading the web pages on the site. If the site takes too long to download the consumer is going to leave and find a different site. This means they have to use links and text to entice the consumer on to the site rather than flashy pictures. In fact pictures, logos, and images should be used sparingly. Certainly if the site looks nice the consumer will enjoy it, but that is not the main concern. It is all about the content whether images or text.

Content is the heart of the web design. The content needs to be easy to read, have information for the target audience, and be well placed. A person will not want to see a one page website with thousands of pages. This will make finding the information more difficult. Instead the content needs to be spaced out over several pages that are linked by a site map.

As long as the pages are linked the consumer can find what they need, when they need it, without trolling through extraneous information. Something else a web design should have is a menu. The menu is going to be an explanation in a keyword, and one sentence for what the link will bring the consumer to. You don’t want to give away information in this area, but enticements to get the consumer to the next few pages.

The compatibility and structure will also have an effect on the web design. For example, you can’t use W3C standards on websites because Internet Explorer is not fully compatible with them. The point here is to use a basic compatibility that all websites will be able to use. You don’t want half your information in a “can’t be displayed” section. This does the web design no good.

The structure of course has something to do with logic. While you have the maps and menus to navigate by, you still need to have a structure on the web design that leads the consumer in a linear fashion to the information they are searching for.

I wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate Y54 on a job well done. I’ve never had so many hits on my website, even when we were paying Google.
